To hide your Match profile, open Profile Visibility from your profile photo on desktop, or open Profile and the gear icon on the app or mobile web, then choose Hidden. Match says the profile leaves search and new members cannot view it. Earlier message threads remain, and hiding does not cancel a paid subscription.

Choose Hidden in the right account
Match offers a reversible Hidden setting for a break from being found by new people. On desktop, sign in, click your profile photo in the navigation bar, select Profile Visibility, and choose Hidden. In the Match app or on mobile web, tap Profile, tap the gear icon, and choose Hidden. Those paths come from Match's Private Mode help, which lists the same visibility choices for all members. Confirm that the displayed choice is Hidden before leaving the screen. Match says a visibility change takes effect immediately, though its help cannot verify the state of your own account.
Check which Match account is signed in if you use more than one email address. Changing visibility on one profile says nothing about another account. Hidden is available without buying Private Mode, so a request to pay at this point is a reason to read the control name again. The paid option is called Choose who sees you, or Private Mode. If the menu on your screen differs from Match's current instructions, use its support route rather than selecting a similar sounding account or payment action. The setting you need for a complete discovery break is Hidden.
To return, use the same visibility menu and choose Visible. Match's hiding guide describes this as a choice you can change later. You can keep the profile hidden while you decide when to browse again. Before making it visible, look at the profile text and photos that new people will see. A break can change your plans, and an old profile may no longer describe what you want to share.
Know what happens to earlier conversations
Hidden removes your profile from search results and stops new members from viewing it. It does not erase conversations that already exist. Match says people you contacted before hiding can still read and reply to earlier messages. In their message thread, your profile appears as Profile Unavailable. That combination matters: a past contact can continue a conversation without being able to open your profile page. If you want distance from one person in particular, changing search visibility alone may not meet that goal.
Match's communication help says you may still receive messages from members you already contacted. It also says a message you send while hidden reaches its recipient, who can read it but cannot view your profile page. Some new communication actions may require you to unhide first; Match gives sending Likes as an example that is unavailable while Hidden. Avoid treating a quiet inbox as proof of a failed setting or an active inbox as proof that the profile returned to search. Both can follow the documented Hidden behavior.
If one conversation is the reason for your break, look at the controls for that connection. Match's profile visibility guide describes blocking a member through the three-dot menu on that person's profile. It also says Match has no control that hides your profile from only selected members while leaving it visible to everyone else. Blocking and hiding therefore solve different problems. Read the result of any block or message action on your own screen before you confirm it.
Compare Hidden with paid Private Mode
Hidden is the broad choice: Match says nobody can view the profile while it is hidden. Private Mode is a paid visibility feature for someone who still wants to contact selected new people. In Private Mode, the people you choose to contact can see your profile. Match says a message, Like, or Super Like can make you visible to that member. People with whom you communicated before buying Private Mode can also still see you. Those rules make Private Mode a different choice from stepping away from discovery entirely. The table below connects each goal with the documented result.
Do not buy Private Mode only because the word private sounds closer to a break. Match says all members can choose Visible or Hidden, while Private Mode must be purchased with a subscription or added later. If you want to decide whom to contact while remaining hidden from others, review the feature and its renewal terms in your own account. If you simply want to stop appearing, choose Hidden. A visibility label does not tell you whether an add-on has been charged or whether a subscription will renew.
When Private Mode actually ends, Match says the profile becomes visible. Canceling the add-on stops its next renewal, but Match says the feature stays active until its end date. Check Profile Visibility when that date arrives and choose Hidden if you want to stay out of discovery. Match also says profile visits made in Private Mode can appear in the other member's Who's Viewed Me list after the mode ends. Separately, the Hidden-profile guide says a visit made while Hidden can register and appear after you unhide. Do not assume either setting erases an earlier visit. Match's public pages cannot confirm what a particular member has seen.
Choose the Match visibility control
The table may be wider than the screen. Focus it and use the arrow keys to reach every column.
| Goal | Control | Result or limit |
|---|---|---|
| Take a break from being found | Hidden | No search listing or new profile views; earlier contacts can still reply |
| Choose which new people see you | Private Mode, a paid feature | People you contact can see you; prior contacts can still see you |
| Limit one person's access | Block that member | A separate member-level control; Match does not offer selective profile hiding |
| Stop another charge | Manage Subscription or the store on the receipt | Check the main plan and any add-on separately |
How to use it Choose the row that matches your goal. If you have both a visibility and billing goal, complete both controls and check their results separately.

Hiding changes who can find and view a profile. Match's subscription help gives a different path for stopping renewal: Manage Subscription in account settings. If you are paying Match directly, open that area and complete the cancellation steps, then check Subscription Status for the result. Match lists separate Deactivate controls for add-ons such as Private Mode. Deactivate stops the add-on's next renewal, while the feature stays active until its end date. It does not cancel the main plan. Check each renewal line, then check Profile Visibility when Private Mode ends.
If a store billed you, use the provider on the receipt. Match's help directs Apple-billed members to App Store subscriptions. A store purchase needs a store status check, since the profile visibility menu cannot show whether that provider stopped renewal. Keep the confirmation or expiration date where you can find it. If you are unsure who billed you, compare the purchase receipt with Match's Subscription Status in the signed-in account. A hidden profile can remain paid, and a canceled plan can leave a profile visible until you change its visibility yourself.
A third choice closes an account. Match's deletion help calls Delete My Account permanent and says it removes matches, messages, and profile information. Hidden keeps earlier message threads available. The Match account deletion guide walks through the payment and data checks before that permanent step. Choose the action according to what you want to keep, then check the result for that action rather than treating a profile's absence from search as proof of deletion.
A break with one conversation still open
Consider a hypothetical reader who has an active conversation on Match and wants to stop appearing to new people for a month. They open the app's Profile and gear icons, choose Hidden, and check the selected state. They keep the existing message thread because Match says past contacts can still reply. They tell the person in that thread when they expect to be available if they have already made plans. The setting handles discovery; it does not send an explanation to that person or change a meeting they agreed to.
Suppose this reader also pays for Private Mode. They open Manage Subscription and check whether the add-on and the main plan each have an upcoming renewal. If they want to stop paying during the break, they follow the cancellation path for each charge and keep the resulting status. They do not infer a billing result from the Hidden label. If they only want privacy from one past contact, they review Match's block control as a separate decision. The correct combination depends on the outcome they want, not on a promise that hiding will silence every message.
At the end of the hypothetical month, the reader can leave Hidden in place, or choose Visible from the same menu. Before returning, they review the profile they will make public and any renewal they intend to keep. If they visited another profile during the break, Match says that visit may appear after they unhide. This example follows Match's published controls; it does not claim to show how an individual private account behaved. The practical check is the visible setting, the message thread, and the separate payment status.
If the setting or result is unclear
If Hidden is missing, first confirm that you are in Profile Visibility rather than a subscription or account-deletion menu. Try Match's documented desktop or mobile path for the account you use. If a control still differs, contact Match support with the menu name and the result you need. Do not send a password in an ordinary support message. Match's public help can describe a control, but only the signed-in account can show whether that control is currently selected for you.
A view counter can keep increasing while the profile is Hidden, according to Match, when someone tries unsuccessfully to open it. The counter alone is therefore weak evidence that strangers can see the profile. A previous contact's reply is also consistent with Hidden. Check the chosen visibility label first, then use support if the account result still conflicts with Match's help. When you are ready to be found again, choose Visible deliberately. Keep payment and any one-person block decision on their own paths.
