Values are Census survey estimates. A small one-decimal difference may be due to survey uncertainty. Do not treat it as proof that one state truly ranks higher.
The 2025 Current Population Survey reports 30.8 for men and 28.4 for women. The 2024 American Community Survey reports 30.8 and 28.8 nationwide. The surveys use different samples and methods. The state table uses only the 2024 survey so its rows are comparable.
Read the difference in years, not just the rank. Small differences may fall within the surveys’ margins of error. The table includes all 50 states and Washington, D.C.
The Current Population Survey estimated 23.5 for men and 21.1 for women in 1975. By 2025, those medians had risen to 30.8 and 28.4.

In the 2024 estimates, Utah was lowest for women at 25.2. Utah and Arkansas tied for men at 27.2.
Connecticut, Massachusetts, and New Hampshire tied for men at 32.4. For women, D.C. was highest at 32.3. Among states, Massachusetts and Rhode Island were highest at 30.9.
