The official adult male height chart
The most useful starting point is the measured U.S. distribution, not a social-media claim or a calculator that hides its source. CDC's National Center for Health Statistics reports a mean height of 68.9 inches for men age 20 and older in Table 8. The weighted median is 69.0 inches, which marks the middle of the estimated national distribution.
The Table 8 row has an unweighted sample of 2,690 examined men age 20 and older. Its weighted percentile estimates are 63.9 inches at the 5th percentile, 65.0 at the 10th, 65.9 at the 15th, 66.9 at the 25th, 69.0 at the 50th, 70.9 at the 75th, 72.1 at the 85th, 72.7 at the 90th, and 73.7 at the 95th. These are reported points from one national survey cycle, not a promise that every height between them has a published rank.
How to read a height percentile
A percentile is a position in the distribution. A reported 75th-percentile height of 70.9 inches means about three quarters of the estimated U.S. male population are at or below that height and about one quarter are at or above it, subject to ties and survey uncertainty. It does not mean that 75 percent of men are exactly 70.9 inches tall. The percentile belongs to the population definition used by the source.
The table rounds heights to one decimal place. That rounding matters near a cutoff. Use the published point as written, keep the unit as inches, and do not turn a nearby unreported height into a false exact rank. When a reader needs a height not listed, the honest answer is that Table 8 does not state that exact percentile.
Age-group medians and 95th percentiles
Table 8 also reports age-group values. For men ages 20–29, the median is 69.3 inches and the 95th percentile is 74.1 inches. For ages 30–39, the median is 69.5 inches and the 95th percentile is 73.7 inches. For ages 40–49, the median is 69.4 inches and the 95th percentile is 74.8 inches.
For ages 50–59, the median is 68.7 inches and the 95th percentile is 73.1 inches. For ages 60–69, the median is 68.9 inches and the 95th percentile is 73.5 inches. For ages 70–79, the median is 68.0 inches and the 95th percentile is 72.5 inches. For ages 80 and older, the median is 66.9 inches and the 95th percentile is unavailable in the reported table.
Why six-foot cutoffs need a careful answer
Six feet is 72.0 inches, but Table 8 does not report an exact percentile for 72.0 inches. The surrounding reported points are 70.9 inches at the 75th percentile, 72.1 inches at the 85th, and 72.7 inches at the 90th. Those points show the neighborhood of the distribution. They do not authorize an exact percentile for 72.0 inches.
Six feet two inches is 74.0 inches, but Table 8 also does not report an exact percentile for 74.0 inches. The age-20-plus 95th-percentile point is 73.7 inches, and the age-specific 95th values vary. A statement such as '74 inches is the 96th percentile' would be an interpolation or another calculation, not a value reported by this table, so this article does not make it.
Mean and median answer different questions
The mean of 68.9 inches is the arithmetic average of the measured heights in the age-20-plus group. The median of 69.0 inches is the middle position after the measured heights are ordered. The two values are close in this table, but they are not interchangeable labels. A question asking for average height can reasonably need the mean, while a percentile question needs a position such as the median or 95th percentile.
Do not infer the shape of the full distribution from the mean alone. The reported percentile points provide more useful context: the 25th percentile is 66.9 inches, the 75th is 70.9 inches, and the 95th is 73.7 inches. The gaps between points are part of the observed distribution. They should not be replaced with a normal-curve assumption unless a separate, explicit method is documented.
How CDC and NCHS obtained the measurements
The source is the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, known as NHANES. It combines household interviews with standardized examinations in mobile examination centers. Trained staff measured standing height with a wall-mounted stadiometer to the nearest 0.1 centimeter. The full anthropometric report analyzed 8,545 examined participants age 2 and older, while the adult-male Table 8 row contains 2,690 examined men age 20 and older.
The sample count is unweighted. NCHS weighted the mean and percentile estimates to represent the U.S. civilian noninstitutionalized population and adjusted for selection probabilities, noncoverage, and nonresponse. The report states an overall examination response rate of 25.6 percent for the survey period. NCHS judged the published estimates statistically reliable under its stated rules, but the response rate and survey design still belong with the result.
The measurement source matters because a standardized examination is different from asking people to report their height. This article keeps the NCHS population, cycle, unit, age bands, weighting, and reported rounding visible. The result is a population estimate. It is not a personal medical assessment and it does not describe an individual person's future height.
What the national estimate does and does not represent
The estimate describes men age 20 and older in the U.S. population covered by the survey. It does not establish a separate distribution for every state, city, workplace, school, household, or online service. A local group can differ because its composition and size differ from the national sample. The national table remains the correct reference for the national question, with that boundary stated clearly.
The age rows are cross-sectional groups measured during the same survey period. They are not a longitudinal record that follows the same people over time. Therefore, the lower median in the 70–79 or 80-plus row must not be described as the amount an individual will shrink. The rows compare different people in different age groups at one period.
A safe way to use the chart
Start with the exact height and unit. Convert centimeters to inches only if the conversion method is visible and the rounded result is labeled. Then find the nearest reported Table 8 point without claiming that the nearest point is the exact percentile for the input. If the input is 69.0 inches, the table gives the median directly. If it is 72.0 or 74.0 inches, report that the table does not publish an exact percentile for that height.
Keep this chart separate from joint-probability questions. Table 8 reports height distribution points, not the probability that a person also meets an income, age, health, location, or other condition. A calculator that combines filters needs its own source, denominator, and model documentation. Do not multiply this chart's points by another percentage unless that calculation explicitly establishes the needed independence or joint data.
The short reading checklist
Before quoting a height percentile, check five items: the population is U.S. men age 20 and older or a stated age band; the measurement is from the 2021–2023 NHANES cycle; the unit is inches; the statistic is a reported percentile point rather than an interpolation; and the source date remains visible. This checklist prevents an old average, a self-reported figure, and an invented rank from being presented as one statistic.
The durable answer is simple: 69.0 inches is the reported median for U.S. men age 20 and older, and 73.7 inches is the reported 95th-percentile point. The table supplies useful landmarks around those values. It does not supply every possible height, a local ranking, an individual forecast, or a reason to attach a social outcome to a measurement.
