HER: dating and community
HER serves queer women, nonbinary people, and trans sapphics. Its free features include chats, friends, communities, and events, and Premium adds controls such as Incognito Mode and sexuality filters.
Because the app serves more than one purpose, it helps to say on your profile whether you want dates, friendship, or both.
Hinge: start with a profile detail
On Hinge you can like a photo or prompt and add a comment. If the other person returns the like, you can chat, and matching and messaging are free.
Gender preferences are free and strict by default. Your preferences are private, although keeping them private leaves your profile visible. Paid plans add filters such as dating intentions.
Bumble: either person can start
Bumble's August 2026 help page says each person has 72 hours after matching to send an opening message, and after one sends it, the other has 72 hours to reply. The timer in your own app shows the current window.
Paid Incognito Mode limits your visibility to people you have liked while it is on. Bumble lists it under Premium and Premium+.
Review your privacy settings
Look through your photos for details such as your address, employer, or daily routine, and find the report and block controls before you need them. A private preference setting and a hidden profile are two separate controls.

Set a travel distance you would accept and state your relationship goal. Over several days, notice whether the profiles near you are relevant and whether you like the way conversations start.
